Assignment 2 SDK Texturing

Assignment 2 - Texturing an SDK File

For this assignment we were given a choice of SDK's to texture. I chose to texture the Outlander model.

The Outlander model was fairly complex as the texture map for it was split into three separate parts:

Because the creator of the SDK had merged all of the layers, I had to deal with the normal maps already being set on the model, although I asked my teacher if there was anything I could do, and he showed me how I could switch off the normal maps on the model so my work showed through.

As much as the Outlanders texture maps were complicated they were also very simple due to all of the details being on the maps already, the main part that made up my texturing was just placing the base colours.

The texturing went very smoothly up until I came to the point where I needed to add the shading and highlights, as some of the textures were placed at a different angle to the rest so that required me to experiment a little with some of the pieces of the maps, so that I would be able to place the lighting and shading effectively.

The final product turned out fairly well in my opinion, although it didnt allow me to properly texture the model myself due to the details already being on the texture maps, but this allowed me to start to understand the differences in materials that would require different shading types; as with the softer materials like cloth had more dull highlights and shading whereas, the metals on the model would need fairly contrasting lighting and shading because of how reflective the surface is.
